Code & Supply Build Night

Let's get together and build some awesome stuff with code. We'll hold an impromptu co-working space where you can work on a project, pair, learn, and mingle. You can hack on anything! Any language, framework, public/open-source, personal, etc. You don’t have to have an idea to hack on! You’re more than welcome to come just to pair with someone.

Build Night is built for all skill levels. Come with what you know. If you have something you're interested in learning, Build Night is a good place to do so because there will be experts in the room to help with just about anything.

Agenda
6:00 - Doors Open
We don't expect everyone to be on time. Walk-in, grab a drink, and meet someone at your table.
6:30 - Project Introductions
Tell the room who you are and what you're working on
6:40 - Build Session
Check out the projects that interested you from the introductions, welcome someone to pair with you, or continue chatting with the people around you.
8:45 - Closing Circle
We'll talk about what we did, even if it's nothing!
Project Inspirations
  • Work on some open-source projects that you use that could use some help exercising their new-developer onboarding.
  • Pick an issue tagged help-wanted in the repo for an open-source project you use daily.
  • Create a dotfiles repo to contain your software toolbox
  • Find a generative art project, learn how it works, and create your own art by making small changes to it.
  • Talk about open source projects you're working on with others.
  • Ask C&S about what open source projects we have that could use some brains.
  • Work on building a presentation for a C&S Meetup
  • Learn more about C&S Compensation Survey and how you can help make it a success
Things not to do:
  • Ask for homework help and expect in-depth help. Some participants may be willing to help a little with programming homework but please expect to work on your homework by yourself maybe with some nudges.
  • Ask participants to sign up for a free trial for your non-open-source commercial product to try it out. Any commercial solicitation requires prior arrangements with C&S.
Conduct Policy
We expect all participants to follow these rules within all Code & Supply venues and events, virtual or in-person, and within all official Code & Supply communication channels.
Code & Supply is dedicated to providing an enjoyable event for everyone and expects participants at our events to act in a way that promotes an environment that is harassment-free, safe, comfortable, and enjoyable to be a part of.

BioBreakfast - State of Life Sciences Panel

This week's special BioBreakfast event features an interactive discussion with some of the leading LifeSciences CEOs in our region, including:

  • Teresa Whalen, RPh, CEO, CytoAgents
  • Jean Pineault, Ph.D., President & CEO, BioHybrid Solutions
  • Dietrich Stephan, Ph.D., NeuBase Therapeutics, Inc., CEO, Founder, and Director

BioBreakfast is a weekly gathering of leaders in the Pittsburgh life sciences sector from 8-10 AM every Tuesday at The Riviera Building at 350 Technology Drive in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh’s Biomedical Sector has long been very siloed. The medical professionals and university researchers do not interact with private industry enough and vice versa. Big companies and small companies are often completely disconnected.

The BioBreakfast is an attempt to bridge the divides between the disparate groups that shape the regional biomedical sector. Most importantly, the Breakfasts try to spur informal networking so that people can build stronger networks and help identify opportunities and individuals they can work with to advance ideas.

8:30 pm - Wrap-Up or Party-time: Head out or Continue the FUN with drinks and connecting with the most REAL humans in PGH

F-Up Nights is a global movement where stories of failed businesses, projects, and careers are told, questioned, and celebrated. In events across the globe, business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders get on stage to acknowledge their work-fuckup in a room full of strangers (ish since this is Pgh with 1-degree of separation).

In a world of obstacles and posturing, F-Up Nights Pittsburgh plans to change the stigma around failure and inspire our brilliant innovative community as we come together and highlight entrepreneurial journeys from some of our very own change-makers.

Hear from Pittsburgh's top entrepreneurs, CEOs and leaders as they share their stories of a time when a business deal went sour, a product got recalled, or life took a turn for the worse. Join our F-Up Nights Pittsburgh community for our 7th event on April 26th at 5:30 pm for drinks, food, laughs and some effed up FAILURES!

Cafe IW: Sustainability

April is Earth Month and IW is bringing together some of Pittsburgh's best minds in sustainability for our Cafe IW at AlphaLab Gear in East Liberty. Together, we'll explore the importance of a sustainable focus in tech with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Aurora Sharrard, the Executive Director of Sustainability at the University of Pittsburgh. Our panelists include Daniela Osio of Kloopify, Brian Scott of PittMoss, and Steve Moritz of Encentiv Energy. In this discussion, we will explore what sustainability means to each of these three founds.

About the Panel:
Dr. Aurora Sharrard is the Executive Director of Sustainability at the University of Pittsburgh, leading Pitt’s Office of Sustainability, cross-departmental sustainability staff, and University-wide sustainability strategy, activities, policies, collaborations, and partnerships. Prior to joining the University, Dr. Sharrard worked at Green Building Alliance (GBA) for 11 years, ultimately serving as its Executive Director. She led the nonprofit in advancing innovation in the built environment by empowering people to create environmentally, economically, and socially vibrant places. In her time at GBA, Dr. Sharrard most notably co-founded the Pittsburgh 2030 District, which now boasts 550+ buildings aspiring towards measured high performance of 50% reductions in energy use, water consumption, and transportation emissions by the year 2030.
Dr. Sharrard holds a Master’s and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Green Design from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Tulane University. She serves on a number of boards and committees, including the Higher Education Climate Consortium, Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services’ Board of Directors, and Will Allen Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Daniela Osio is the CEO & Founder of Kloopify, the climate action platform for the commodities companies buy. Daniela is a procurement and supply chain executive with years of experience working closely with CEOs, CPOs, Business Unit Leaders, and other senior leaders in the chemical industry to transform and digitize global supply chains. During the pandemic, procurement departments were identified as the drivers of sustainability within companies yet they lacked the data, technology, and skillset to achieve the company’s goals. From her experience in managing supplier sustainability data in spreadsheets, Daniela saw procurement’s need for innovation. Daniela and her cofounder began building Kloopify to empower procurement. Daniela's work with Kloopify established her as an innovator in the field, where she recently won 'The Innovation Award' from the Future Insights Network. In 2023, she was named a 30 under 30
Formerly at DuPont, Daniela was the Global Risk Management Leader who created, developed, and implemented a Risk Management organization for the $4.0 billion Electronics and Imaging (E&I) Business Unit. She led the warehousing, barge, tank & transloading categories through the second largest merger in history, the DOW and DuPont merger, and in 2019 was named a 30 under 30 Supply Chain Star by the Institute of Supply Chain Management.

Brian Scott is the CEO of PittMoss, a sustainability-focused company that makes soils from recycled paper and cardboard instead of carbon-emitting peat moss. Brian is a 14-year angel investor and PittMoss is his seventh startup or turnaround. He helped take his first company public on the NYSE and started the Tall Ships Erie Festival among many other for- and non-profit projects. He also currently serves on the board of Aurochs Brewing (and IW company).

Steve Moritz is the Founder and CEO of Encentiv Energy, a technology company dedicated to expanding access to utility incentives through software and data solutions. Encentiv Energy’s vision is to accelerate decarbonization by connecting customers and communities with energy and carbon saving innovations. Steve’s background as a lawyer and an entrepreneur in the energy industry over the last 30 years gives him a unique perspective on how new ideas can help solve the daunting energy and climate challenges we face. For the last four years he has proudly served as a volunteer mentor to dozens of energy efficiency and sustainability technology start-ups. He also is a participant in the Wexner Climate Change Summit, a group of 54 global leaders selected to advance their work on climate change mitigation, adaptation and preparedness.

Nerd Nite Pittsburgh

Nerd Nite Pittsburgh is a lecture series that’s a mix between a comedy show, a TED talk, and a social mixer! Speakers present for 15 minutes on a variety of topics related to science and technology, popular culture, history, and other nerdery with a vibe that’s as entertaining as it is academic! Audience members can ask questions, and beforehand there is an entirely optional social game. If you like alcohol, learning about random and interesting things, and meeting other nerds this is for you! Social game starts at 6:30, Doors open for the show at 7:30, show starts at 7:45. If you have a topic you are passionate about and you’d like to be a speaker at a later event get in touch at pittsburgh@nerdnite.com!

Comedy Nite will feature 3 touring comics! This event will take place at the Rivers Club Downtown. The entrance to the Rivers Club is on the 4th floor of the Oxford Centre Garage. As you enter from the garage on level 4, a door marked 'Rivers Club' will be on your right. Go through that door and you will be in a marble lobby with a private elevator on your right. Take the elevator to Level 6.

April 27th will feature the following presentations:
  • The Hero With A Thousand Whiskers; Why Puss in Boots the Last Wish was A Joseph Campbell Wet Dream:
There’s no reason why the third installment of a spin-off Shrek sequel should be as good as it is. Why did it go so hard? Why was a children’s movie as deep and affecting as it was? By drawing upon universal themes and employing the “Hero’s Journey” narrative structure, the filmmakers gifted us something ancient yet brand new. (In other words, a classic.) Speaker Ronnie Fleming will take you through the film (warning: spoilers) following each stage of Joseph Campbell’s template for storytelling, “The Hero with a Thousand Faces.” Ronnie was a screenwriting student, a New York City dog-walker, and is now a touring comedian always on the lookout for movies that inspire him like P in B 3 did.
  • Fairly innocuous: Are Diamonds really forever?:
In her talk, Brittany Alexis examines the prevalence of strong beliefs concerning engagement rings and their origins and connects that to larger concepts often heralded as fact or “history” such as why there are more states with Confederate Monuments than states that existed during the Civil War. She encourages you to come with an open mind and have fun questioning why you believe what you believe and if it’s fact or really good marketing.
Brittany Alexis is an up and coming comic in the Pittsburgh/Erie comedy scene. She began her comedy journey doing open mics at Hambones to get over her jitters about being a trial attorney but fell in love with the craft and she’s excited to be a part of this show because she’s a nerd at heart.
  • Fundamentals of Music OR Sound Over Time:
To many, MUSIC is a mystical enigma created by people with CRAZY hairstyles or EVEN WORSE…powdered WIGS! This may be true, but MUSIC is ALSO a system of creating and describing SOUND over TIME. MUSIC is composed of different elements that we can understand, talk about, notate, or even manipulate to CREATE OUR OWN MUSIC! Musician and comedian, Paulie Stags, will introduce (or reintroduce) you to some of the most fundamental elements of music. There will most likely be audience participation. He may insult someone, but it will probably be a dead composer. Powdered wigs are highly encouraged, but not required.
